Taylor was just setting her laptop aside on the nightstand when Jason started to stir beside her. When she had woken up earlier, she found him hugged up against her asleep again, even if she had been aware he had been up and out of the bed at some point. She had just been too tired to really realise when or where he went. He couldn't have been gone that long, and she was relieved to find him back in bed with her when she crawled her way back to sleep consciousness. After that, she couldn't sleep herself, so she took a quick trip to the bathroom and then came back to bed, settling in with her laptop and striking up a conversation with Matt online, even if he was only a couple of doors away up the hall. She was feeling a little better herself, her stomach not churning so horribly and all the other symptoms seemed to have settled right down. She was just tired now, and more than a little crushed their wedding had to be cancelled.

She slipped her fingers into Jason's messy hair, brushing it back off his face as she looked down at him, watching him wake slowly... )

[Follows a few days after THIS]

It had been a tough few days in Austin for Taylor, to say the least. She didn't think her or Jason intended for them to just end up in bed together as soon as they reunited, but it had happened, and she wasn't sorry for it. It was the first time in months she felt alive and connected again. That just wasn't something she could regret. But it hadn't made anything easier. In the wake of it, it just seemed that they fell into this realm of not visiting what they needed to; not talking about what needed to be discussed. She knew why, too. They were both terrified of what was going to result in talking.

So, they didn't. They didn't say very much at all, and just spent the time being together. She had asked him if he wanted her to leave, to stay somewhere else, but he hadn't. He wanted her to stay here, and it seemed to be an unspoken agreement that she would just share his bed. That part of things seemed to click like nothing had changed, but there was still tension there. They couldn't go on like this forever.

It hadn't been lost on her how weak and drained he had looked when she first arrived. He had been pale and unshaven, had lost weight since she last saw him. That made sense, too, if what Tim had told her had been true. Jason had mostly been living on a liquid diet and his health had to have suffered on some level because of it. For her, it was easy to just fall right back into taking care of him. She started to make sure he was eating okay and helped him have clean clothing in easy reach. She just couldn't understand how something could feel so comfortable, yet so off-balance all at the same time.

It was now morning, and the rest of the house was quiet. Taylor had been awake for a little while, just lying there lost in her thoughts while Jason slept heavily beside her. She felt it came time to just get up and let him sleep, but when she shifted and rose to get to the edge of the bed, the frame squeaked and disturbed Jason, waking him up. She stifled the urge to curse under her breath as she guiltily looked back at him. "Sorry, QB. Go back to sleep, sweetheart..." she urged in a hushed voice.

It was a freezing day in Austin, but Jason had hardly noticed. In fact, Jason had hardly done anything that day. It was one of those days where you wake up feeling shit and everything around you feels shit too. You don't feel like being spoken to, and by default, just from the vibes you're sending out, everyone automatically just steers clear. He got out of bed for his morning routine in the bathroom, but after that was done, he was disappearing back into the cave of blankets, all the blinds drawn and the lights out. He didn't bother getting dressed, didn't shave, and didn't even feel hungry. Both Sam and Tyra asked him if he was sick, but he just told them both he wanted to be left alone. They got it. He never had to ask twice when he was in a funk like this, and he appreciated it. He didn't know where Silas was, which suited Jason at that point. He wasn't feeling the least bit sociable that day, even if Tyra's new other half had afforded them all much amusement in the short time he had been in Texas. Everything from supplying extremely good weed to wanting a shot in Jason's chair and ending up mincemeat against the wall complete with a broken arm. Jason had laughed more this past week than he had in months, but now he had come to a crashing halt. Everything felt so compounded today; the fact he was cripple and couldn't walk, that he lost his football career, that he let Tim and Lyla fuck him around, that his job prospects were in the toilet, that he let himself get taken for a ride by Erin, that he let himself get close to Noah, that he lost Mac and their baby, and couldn't be enough to have protected them from getting hurt. All in all, that day, he was just a big half-paralysed ball of misery but at least he was containing it to himself, right?

What he did know was that he was home alone... )

Taylor parked her car up on the front lawn of the apartment and shoved her keys in the pocket of her long knitted coat as she got out and slammed the door. She pushed her unruly blonde curls back out of her face as she hurried up the path, but before she reached the front door, it opened and Jason appeared with Tim just behind him. She stopped as their gaze met and bit down on her lip. She hesitantly breached the gap, stuffing her hands into her pockets. “I-I just couldn’t wait any longer to see ya’, darlin’…” she told him nervously. “I should never have run away in the first place and I’m so sorry. I just had t’come.”

Jason shook his head. “No, it’s okay. I was just… I was just coming to see you,” he assured her and reached out to touch her arm. “Are you okay?”

Tim weaved his way around Jason’s chair and stepped out onto the front lawn. “Yeah, I’m gonna go do shit… somewhere else… not here. Catch yas.” He was about as subtle as knee in the nuts, but so what? )

Jason had a lot of forward planning on his hands. When he suggested the day before to Taylor that they do something together that day, it had been merely just an attempt to cheer her up after she had been sick and miserable for the past couple of days. When he decided to head to the park just down the block from their apartment for a picnic, it all seemed easy enough. At least, it had until Taylor woke up in the early hours of the morning vomiting again. Jason woke with her this time and camped out in the bathroom to keep her company, although he couldn't let it go without firmly suggesting almost to the point of irritation that Taylor should go to the doctor. She reluctantly agreed and made an appointment for the end of the week. She was going to have to go sooner or later anyway.

But Jason's picnic plans seemed defunct when Taylor was likely not going to want to put anything but water near her mouth and, even then, water was questionable... )

It's funny how things sometimes seem to come in cycles. Despite the disastrous drunken trek to Austin for shiny things, Jason had managed to narrowly avoid totally screwing up his relationship with Taylor and they were back in the place where Jason stopped doing impulsive stupid things and Taylor agreeing not to smack him down for worrying her so much. Actually, things were really great, maybe even better now they had their first official 'fight'. In a way, it was kind of healthy and helped them both realise exactly what it was going to take to keep operating on the same page. Jason was learning what it was like to have someone deeply love him and worry when things weren't right with him. Taylor was learning that there really was more to like than living, breathing and existing just for work, and that more was Jason Street. So, so much more.

They were now back to sitting together alone in the deserted Panthers stadium, just like they had done the night of their first date. A cycle, without them even realising it... )

Taylor had rushed to the door as soon as she heard Jason’s truck pull up in the drive, closely followed by Tim’s (driven by Sam). It had just been a damn relief to seem him alive initially, but as he got out the truck and made his way up the drive in his chair, she could feel herself scowling more and more. She was tugged in half then, one side of her wanting to pull him inside and give him a good dose of TLC for basically looking like crap, but the other more prominent side was pissed off at his disappearing act, of which she spent the whole time near peeing her pants from worry.

She stood just inside the door with her arms folded across her chest and her hip propping the screen door open. The #6 Panthers jersey was bunched up across the front just from how tightly her arms were crossed and she drew a small breath when he came within shouting distance of her, letting it out through her nose with a huff... )

Jason didn’t even know what time it was, he just knew it was late. And dark. But it was late and dark and he had that funny shiver at the top of his spine he sometimes got when he needed the bathroom. It was never an urge like normal people got, just now and again he had an unexplainable sensation that he needed to go. It was always better to be safe than sorry, even if about eight times out of ten the sensation was inaccurate or he didn’t make it in time. Still, it was the first night Mac was spending with him in the new place and the last thing he wanted to do was pee all over her in bed. In fact, he had realised he was getting a complex about that. He hadn’t really shared his bed regularly with anyone since the accident and while he usually had really good control in that area, he was now as paranoid as all hell. One thing he couldn’t deny was that ‘good’ wasn’t ‘perfect’ and there were still times he found himself in embarrassing situations.

So, it was late and it was dark and Jason decided a trip to the bathroom was vital... )

With news that Tim was awake and doing much better, Coach had managed to convince Jason to head home for some rest and come back the following day. It was a practical suggestion on account of the fact that Tim was sleeping a lot and clearly not up for too many visitors, nor were his doctors allowing many people through. Jason had been tired when he left the hospital mid-morning and although he had plans to meet Taylor at the hospital at some point, he ended up giving a call and telling her to come around to his place instead. But as most best laid plans went, they didn’t exactly come off as anticipated. When Jason got home, he made the mistake of getting onto his bed for a bit of a lie down before Taylor arrived and he was out like a light in minutes. And this was exactly how Taylor found him, having the luxury of Mrs Street telling her when she arrived that Jason had been quiet since he came home and she suspected he was asleep.

Which he was. Taylor didn’t knock on his bedroom door in case it disturbed him, instead choosing to open it quietly and peek in to see if Mrs Street’s suspicions were correct.... )

Taylor popped the last button on Jason’s shirt and slipped her hands beneath the light cotton fabric to run her palms across the plains of Jason’s toned chest and stomach. She was sitting straddled across his lap, down to just her underwear and tank top she had worn under her blouse to the date. Jason’s wheelchair was upturned on its side beside the bed and the rest of their clothing was strewn in a messy trail from the door of his bedroom to the bed. It had been an awkward struggle to get out of most of it. Taylor had to be careful with her arm and Jason never really had the best striptease coordination in his chair. But they eventually made it to the bed and Jason’s shirt was the last piece of clothing to be discarded.

He looked down at her hands on his chest and sat forward a little so he could shrug his arms out of the dress shirt... )

Perhaps it wasn’t the most conventional way to end a first date, but it was fitting for them. Lying in the middle of the Panthers stadium on a blanket from the back of Jason’s truck staring up at the stars in the clear Dillon sky. It was a chilly night, so they were rugged up in coats, but the cold air was the last thing on their minds. He had his arm wrapped securely around her and she was lying in against him with her head resting on his shoulder. She had foregone the sling for the night, assuring him she would be okay if she just took it easy, which worked, considering he really hadn’t been planning any impromptu bungee jumping after dessert.

Despite his panic with Sam the night before, he had bitten the bullet and decided that if he was going to take Taylor on a date, he was going to do it all right... )

Jason didn’t really know what brought him to the empty Panthers stadium that afternoon. School was out for the day and with the football season over, the field was deserted and quiet. Home felt so oppressive and small these days. God bless his parents and all the effort they made to try and help him feel at home again, but it wasn’t working. He was restless in Dillon and no matter what he did, he couldn’t shake that feeling. He slowly pushed himself up to the fifty yard line, the wheels of his chair leaving tracks in the dirt on the sideline. The bleachers loomed up towards the sky across from him and he sighed, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees as he just watched the empty field.

There was no way to know how many times he had run the length of it or how many tackles he had instigated there. His eyes inevitably trailed to that one place that would haunt him forever. The tackle gone wrong. The interception and then ending up in a broken, crushed mess barely feet away from where he sat just now. That is where it all ended… or started, depending how you looked at it. It felt like a lifetime ago. Hell, it felt like it hadn’t even been him who spent the best years of his life training with blood, sweat and tears on this very field to become a professional footballer. And in a way it wasn’t him. He wasn’t the same person anymore that he was back then and never would be that Jason Street again.

He tore his eyes away from that patch of finely cropped grass and looked up, squinting a little in the watery winter sun and realised then that he wasn’t alone... )
